By Social Sustainability we mean the development of a safe and caring village-style living environment. The development design and community structure will provide opportunities for social interaction, interaction with the natural environment and for art and relaxation.
By Environmental Sustainability we mean that we protect and enhance the resources and natural environment of the site. We will endeavour to "meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs".
The design for the Illabunda retains a strong connection to the natural and cultural environments. Construction will minimise impact on the environment and housing will utilise environmentally sound materials and techniques.
Residential grid energy requirements will be minimised through efficient, passive solar design of the houses, efficient appliances and lifestyle choices and through onsite solar energy production.
Total water cycle management will be applied to the development including harvesting of rainwater for potable water use and treating waste-water for re-use.
Waste materials will be recycled on site as far as possible through a composting and recycling service.
Food will be grown on site as far as possible to reduce dependence on the existing wasteful global economy and the central location of Illabunda and its focus on developing village enterprises will assist to reduce dependence on motor vehicles.
Finally, Economic Sustainability provides a reasonable economic return for the development without compromising the social and environmental sustainability outcomes to demonstrate that sustainable development is a financially sound way into the future for urban environments.
It also encompasses the fostering of enterprises based in the village to encourage local employment, reduce dependence on motor vehicles for transport and increase the skills and services available to the community at Illabunda and the wider community.
